But there’s no universal “good” number. For someone starting out, getting below 36 is already an achievement. An experienced player usually aims for single digits. The best reference is your own progress: that the number accurately reflects your actual game and decreases as you improve.

What does having a handicap of 0 mean?

It means you play at a scratch level. Under normal conditions, you’re expected to complete the course close to its Course Rating. It doesn’t mean you’ll always play to par: each round depends on the day, the tees, the course, and the conditions.

Can a handicap be less than zero?

Yes. Players with a skill level above scratch have a plus handicap, represented as +1.0, +2.0, and so on. Instead of receiving strokes, they give strokes to the course or other players when calculating the Playing Handicap.

What is the maximum handicap in golf?

54.0, without distinction of gender or age. And a new round only directly affects the calculation if its differential falls among those selected, or if it displaces another relevant one from your last 20.

Can a handicap be calculated by playing nine holes?

Yes. A nine-hole round is valid as long as the course has current Course Rating and Slope Rating. Since the 2024 changes, the WHS combines the differential from those nine holes with an expected score to produce an equivalent 18-hole differential. For your first handicap, however, you’ll need to accumulate at least 54 played holes across several rounds.

Does the Awolf Handicap replace the official handicap?

No. The official handicap is managed by the RFEG and regional federations, and you need it for federated competitions.
